Vienna's Kurzparkzone (Short-Stay Zone) Explained

Since 2022 the whole of Vienna is one short-stay parking zone, the Kurzparkzone. It applies Monday to Friday, 09:00–22:00, and on-street parking during those hours costs €3.40 per hour with a two-hour maximum. There's no way around the two-hour cap by buying back-to-back tickets — for a longer stay you need a garage or a resident permit.

You pay with a paper ticket from a Trafik (tobacconist) or, more easily for visitors, the official HANDYPARKEN app. The ticket ladder runs 30 min €1.70, 1 h €3.40, 1.5 h €5.10, 2 h €6.80, and 15 minutes is free with a ticket. Designated shopping streets and a few edge areas are regulated differently, and residents with a Parkpickerl permit are exempt in their own district. Parkhaus City Stephansplatz is closest on the list, about a 1-minute walk from Vienna's Kurzparkzone (Short-Stay Zone) Explained. Strobelgasse is the cheapest option at 3,40 €/Std..

Frequently asked questions

How do I find Vienna's short-stay parking zone?+
On Hittaparkering you compare parking in Vienna on a map — price, walking distance and estimated availability are shown so you can decide before driving in.
What is estimated availability?+
Estimated availability is a model-based prediction using time, location, weather and historical pressure. It doesn't replace real-time data but helps you pick before you drive.
What's worth knowing about parking here?+
You pay with a paper ticket from a Trafik (tobacconist) or, more easily for visitors, the official HANDYPARKEN app.
Any practical tip?+
Buy the ticket before you leave the car — enforcement is by licence plate and there's no grace period beyond the free 15 minutes. Two hours is the hard limit on the street; plan a garage for anything longer.
Can I pay for parking with a foreign credit card in Vienna?+
Yes. Aimo Park, APCOA, and EasyPark garages in Vienna accept Visa and Mastercard from international cards. Street parking meters also accept contactless Visa/Mastercard. Most Swedish parking apps require a Swedish BankID or phone number — as a tourist, garages, street meters, or the EasyPark app (which supports international sign-up) are your most reliable options.
How do I pay for street parking in Vienna as a tourist?+
Find the parking meter on the kerb — modern Swedish meters accept contactless Visa and Mastercard. Enter your licence plate, choose your duration, and tap your card to pay. No Swedish phone number or BankID needed. If a meter only accepts coins or Swedish cards, the nearest Aimo Park or APCOA garage is a reliable alternative.
